ChatGPT Shopping: Shopify Catalog or a Direct Product Feed?

A merchant decision guide to Shopify and Etsy catalog integration, direct product feeds, website crawling, and the distinct goals of shopping results and answer citations.

Updated September 27, 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated for shopping discovery, so individual merchants on those platforms do not need an additional application merely for that route. Other merchants can apply to share a feed. In every case, check current eligibility and product facts separately from ordinary website citations.

First identify the discovery surface

A product may be named in a written answer, linked as a web source, or shown in a shopping result with an image, price, and merchant. These are different experiences. A product feed helps supply structured catalog information for shopping discovery; it is not a switch that reserves an organic recommendation or makes every product page a cited web source.

Start by recording which experience you want to improve, which products and country matter, and what a buyer currently sees. A broad claim such as “not in ChatGPT” often hides a more specific issue: the wrong variant, outdated availability, or a missing source link.

Shopify or Etsy: verify the existing catalog route

OpenAI’s current merchant page states that Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated and that individual merchants do not need an additional setup or application for that integration. The merchant still needs correct product titles, images, variants, price, availability, and useful landing pages. Check what actually appears for relevant buyer questions before planning duplicate feed work.

If products are missing or wrong, check the merchant’s catalog data and current platform documentation. Do not infer from an absent result that a manual feed is automatically the answer; eligibility, shopper context, and product relevance also matter.

Other commerce systems: assess a direct feed

OpenAI allows merchants to apply to share product data. Its current merchant page says shopping is live in the United States and describes a developing self-service integration path. A direct feed is a larger operational commitment: someone must own identifiers, images, current prices and stock, validation, and updates. Check the official specification before creating a file because supported fields and onboarding can change.

Keep the direct-feed plan distinct from on-site content work. A complete feed can improve catalog accuracy for a supported shopping surface while a weak product page may still fail to help a buyer compare suitability or understand trade-offs.

A short decision checklist

For a Shopify or Etsy merchant, verify the catalog route and product data first. For another merchant, confirm target market and current access to OpenAI’s feed onboarding, then map the fields and update process. For all merchants, inspect actual shopping and answer outputs separately and log the exact prompts, dates, products, and source links.

Our role can be to document those observations, review product information, and prepare an approved improvement plan. We do not represent access to an OpenAI merchant program or guarantee a shopping placement.

  • Shopping card: check product details and merchant destination.
  • Written answer: check whether the model and use case are accurately described.
  • Citation: check the linked URL and the claim it supports.
