Indexing is one piece of the discovery path, not a placement guarantee. Verify that the specific page and its useful text are accessible, then test relevant buyer questions, product fit, factual clarity, and the sources actually used in the answer. Record mentions and citations separately.
Confirm what “indexed” means for this page
A page appearing in a traditional search index shows it can be found there; it does not prove an AI assistant used it for a particular answer. Check the canonical URL, page availability, robots controls, and whether the core product explanation is present in readable page text. OpenAI documents a separate OAI-SearchBot control for its search features; Google has its own crawling and indexing systems.
Check the exact URL and a representative product page, not only the homepage. A public sitemap and a successful fetch are useful diagnostics, but neither guarantees a citation.
Test a question the product truly fits
Suppose a lightweight tablet page is indexed. “Best tablet” may be too broad to expose its strengths; “lightweight tablet with keyboard and stylus for study” tests a more relevant decision. Record market, availability, budget, accessory compatibility, and the buyer’s task. If the product is not sold in the market or lacks the requested feature, absence may be appropriate.
Run a small panel of nearby questions rather than changing wording until one favorable answer appears. Save competitor models and source links for each observation.
Compare the answer with the evidence
Inspect whether the page clearly states the exact model, variants, weight, display, battery, accessory support, limitations, and current market availability. Compare those facts with retailer listings and independent descriptions. If an answer cites a page with a useful comparison, ask what evidence it contains and whether an accurate contribution would help its readers.
Separate an incorrect product description from no mention and from no URL citation. The first suggests an accuracy repair, the second may require better question fit or source coverage, and the third may concern which page best supports the claim.
Choose a repair and a repeat check
Prioritize a page change that helps a buyer decide: a direct answer, a sourced specification, a comparison with limitations, or a link to the exact product variant. If an external listing is stale, seek a correction through its ordinary editorial or merchant process. Keep a dated record of what changed and who approved it.
Repeat the original question panel after the change. Report what was observed, where it varied, and what remains unknown. The absence of a citation after one edit is not proof that the page failed; a new mention alone is not proof that the edit caused it.
